Spokane coffee roasters had a big year in 1993, when one started on the Gonzaga campus and a family business began hand roasting in the city. The Roast Local directory lists 14 roasters under Spokane today, the most of any town in eastern Washington.   • Indaba Coffee Roasters, North Monroe Street: started in the fall of 2009 with a cafe on West Broadway, began roasting in house in 2014 and opened its flagship cafe and roastery on North Monroe in 2024.
  • Thomas Hammer Coffee Roasters, Spokane: born in 1993 on the campus of Gonzaga University.
  • Cravens Coffee, Spokane: a family owned business that has hand roasted in Spokane since 1993.

Indaba's shelf, as its shop showed on 2026-09-27, runs from the Lilac City Blend to White Elephant white coffee, Cliff Jumper canned cold brew and green coffee for home roasters. The company received a Greater Spokane Agora community service award in 2016.

Spokane's coffee story

1993 was a busy year for Spokane coffee. Thomas Hammer Coffee Roasters was born that year on the campus of Gonzaga University, and Cravens Coffee began hand roasting as a family owned business in the same year.

Anvil arrived at its current name in January 2000. A decade later, in 2010, Deborah Di Bernardo opened Roast House, which has won more than 26 medals since 2014 from the Golden Bean, the Good Food Awards and Coffee Review.

The city also turns up on the bags. Indaba's Lilac City blend takes Spokane's nickname, and its High Drive and Bowl and Pitcher blends carry Spokane names too.

A bag from a Spokane roaster keeps wages and rent inside the city, from West Central to North Monroe, and helps keep a small roaster open. That is the argument on why local roasters matter.
