Anvil Coffee is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Washington: an independent roaster based in Spokane, founded in 2000. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
The name dates to January 2000. The first shop was in a 1950 garage in the Perry District on Spokane's lower South Hill. Roasting now happens every morning in the Washington Cracker Building, built in 1891, on a manual Diedrich. The owners had spent seven years in the coffee trade before 2000 and began roasting only to supply their own shop, soon adding the businesses next door.
Anvil wrote grant proposals for sidewalks and street lights and says it helped revive the Perry District, which was run down when the shop opened. Its Diedrich uses infrared burners, which the company says cut emissions, and most online orders ship the day they are roasted.
What they roast
Roast levels run light, medium and dark. House blends include Sweater Weather, Snow Day, Straight Drippin', Happy Camper, Jerry's Dark Roast, Super Fantastic and The Coal Forge. Single origins on the list when we checked: Brazil, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Colombia, Costa Rica and Frank Sumatra. Espresso: Espresso Blend.
