Paper Tiger Coffee Roasters is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Washington: an independent roaster based in Vancouver. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Beans are roasted at the Grand Blvd shop, which also serves drinks. Staff train students from the Washington School for the Deaf and the state School for the Blind, some in roasting and some at the espresso bar. The company says a single origin espresso from the Roowad cooperative in the Hayma region of Yemen won it a bronze at the 2016 Golden Bean North America competition.
Its owner started a blog in 2016 as the Coffee Road-ster, writing about sampling local coffee wherever he rode, including a 2016 trip to the San Juan Islands. Current coffees include whole beans from JC Farms in Carmo de Minas and from Traviesa Farms in Colombia, along with Ethiopian offerings and a Swiss Water decaf.
What they roast
House blends include Snow Leopard Winter Blend, Expedition, Espresso, Tiger Stripe and French Roast Robusta. Single origins on the list when we checked: Sumatra, Ethiopia, Sidamo, Chati, Tanzania and Colombia, 3 Fincas. Espresso: Espresso, Tiger Stripe. Decaf: Swiss Water Processed house decaf. Why buying from Paper Tiger Coffee Roasters matters here
Some staff use American Sign Language, and the shop says it has been recognized by city, county and state for its inclusion work. Places listed as serving its beans include Fuel Wine and Bistro, The Garage Bar and Grill, Routes Coffee Bar and the Hello Waffle Cart. In 2016 the roaster sponsored a trophy at the NW Unfinished Car Show, choosing a 1955 Dodge pickup from Kelso as its winner.
