BJ's Coffee Roasters is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Washington: an independent roaster based in Vancouver. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
The company dates to the late 1980s and credits early mentoring from Peet's founder Alfred Peet. All coffee goes through a gas-fired rotating drum roaster, and green beans are bought through local importers. Each new green coffee is roasted several times at different levels and cupped, and the result becomes a written roast plan and cupping profile for that coffee.
Its drum roasters are linked to computers that track bean temperature and moisture, but roasters still taste each batch and adjust by hand, and most orders ship within a day of roasting. Cafe Femenino, one of its organic lines, comes from a program that began with more than 460 women growers in Peru and now includes over 1,500 women across seven countries. Independent cafes that buy wholesale can get help with menu development, syrups and mixes, private labeling, and equipment sourcing, installation and upkeep.

House blends include BJ's Primo Blend, Breakfast Blend, French Roast, Italian Roast, Mocha Java, Roastmaster Blend and West Valley Blend. Single origins on the list when we checked: Ethiopia Harrar, Ethiopia Yirgacheffe, Kenya AA, Brazil Cerrado, Colombia Supremo, Costa Rica Tarrazu, Guatemala Antigua, Guatemala Huehuetenango, Mexico Altura Pluma, Java Estate and Sumatra Mandheling.
