Maniac Coffee Roasting is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Washington: an independent roaster based in Bellingham, founded in 2006. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
The owners opened The Black Drop Coffeehouse in downtown Bellingham in 2002 and started Maniac in 2006 so they could roast all their own beans. Later the Black Drop passed to a long-time employee, while the roasting company stayed with its original owners. At the Black Drop the owners trained staff to the drink-making standards used by the United States Barista Championship and the Specialty Coffee Association of America.
Wholesale partners can receive the same barista training the owners held themselves to while running the coffeehouse. The press page says Maniac appears on page 266 of Left Coast Roast, a book by Hanna Neuschwander. Cafes, restaurants and workplaces can set up wholesale accounts, and the company says it usually answers inquiries within one or two business days.
What they roast
Roast levels run Medium, Dark and Espresso. House blends include Bellinghamster Blend, Cobra Kai, Home is Where the Heart Is, Raven's Eye, The Darkness and Half-feinated. Single origins on the list when we checked: Sumatra Queen Ketiara, Ethiopia Natural Yirgacheffe Gr1, Colombia El Corazon, Brazil Daterra Villa Borghesi and Mexico Dana Montana. Espresso: 'Spro 2: Electric Boogaloo; Espresso Alectrona. Decaf: Decaf Royale and Decaf Espresso Royale (Swiss Water Process). Offerings change with the seasons, so this is what their own pages listed on 2026-09-28.
