Their story

Roasting started in 1971 in a coffeehouse in Fairhaven's historic Terminal Building, where beans were sold by the scoop from glass jars. In 1995 roasting shifted to the Irongate District, a few miles to the north, and an American-built Loring roaster went in during 2019. The company helped found World Coffee Research in 2012 and says it passed $1,000,000 in fair trade social premiums in 2018.

In 2002 it became one of the first US roasters to source coffee that was organic, fair trade and shade grown, buying from cooperatives owned by farmers, and it joined the Roasters Guild in 2004. The company says Roast Magazine named it 2021 Macro Roaster of the Year and that it took first place in the Specialty Coffee Association's Roasters Choice competition in 2014. After a 2020 carbon review by Kulshan Services, a local environmental firm, the roastery and delivery fleet went carbon neutral; the next goal is offsetting all emissions back to 1971 by 2030.

Roast levels run Light, Medium, Dark and Espresso. House blends include Coffeehouse, Foghorn, French Royale and Trail Breaker (extra dark). Single origins on the list when we checked: Kenya Mihuti, Mexico and Peru. Espresso: Espresso Classico (medium); Espresso Noir (dark). Decaf: Decaf Pacific. Online orders can be collected at the Division Street roastery on weekdays from 9am to 2pm; roastery tours are not offered.
