Their story

Scott Hartwich and Mary Burwell founded the company in 2007 after running an early espresso cart, and later a coffee house, in Portland, Oregon. Current owners Mitchell Steed and Meredith O'Malley took over the business and say they want to keep the founders' legacy going. Since early 2016 it has bought Fair Trade Organic green coffee, preferring cooperatives of small growers to large plantations.

The organic seal is not on the front of its bags; the owners say they are working on a new certification and list the beans as 100% organic on the back. Weekly and monthly subscribers make up an active online customer base that the owners credit with helping the company grow. Wholesale accounts include shops, restaurants and cafes, and buyers who order often can ask for custom labels on branded bags.

Roast levels run Medium, Medium-Dark and Dark. House blends include Velvet Elvis, Giving Blend, Baker Blend, Northwest Espresso, Chuckanut Gold, Mocha Jabba, Half-Life, Sunnyland Brew, Whatcom Dark, Hammerhead Stout, Daddio and Breakfast. Single origins on the list when we checked: Guatemala Huehuetenango, Sumatra and Ethiopia Sidamo. Espresso: Northwest Espresso. Decaf: 100% Decaf (medium-dark); Cal's half decaf, half Velvet Elvis.
