Roasters on Vashon

  • The Vashon Island Coffee Roasterie: roasts on site in a rustic Northern European style, using the shop's original vintage roasters and wooden Swedish grinders. Visitors can watch roasting on a 100-year-old barrel roaster.
  • Blossom Coffee Roasters: roasting on the island since 2003, every batch on a vintage German Probat UG-15, with a lean toward light and medium-light roasts. It supplies cafes and grocers around Seattle.
  • Pollard Coffee: started in 2012 by Robin Pollard, who taught herself to roast. Daniel Swenson now leads the roasting, and visits are by appointment only.

We list these roasters as local favorites. A listing does not mean the roaster is part of the club.

Vashon's coffee story

The oldest story here belongs to Jim Stewart. He began roasting in 1969 as The Wet Whisker in Coupeville, on Whidbey Island, and in 1982 moved his roasting to a building on Vashon under the Stewart Brothers name. The company later took the name Seattle's Best Coffee after winning a chefs' tasting contest.

That building is more than 110 years old and housed Rodda's Price-Rite grocery from 1912 to 1939. Since 2003 it has been home to The Vashon Island Coffee Roasterie, an independent cafe and roaster that opened with Stewart as a mentor. Owner Eva runs it as a family business with her husband Ken and their children. An old roaster from Stewart's Pier 70 days still works and comes out when the power goes off, and upstairs is the Minglement herb shop, started in 1972.

Blossom also dates to 2003. It roasts Monday through Thursday, 25 pounds at most per batch, and ships most orders within one or two business days. Recent single origins include a washed Rwanda from the Gatsibo district.

Robin Pollard grew up on an Iowa farm and holds a master's degree in agriculture. A Yemeni roaster in her Washington, DC neighborhood taught her about origins. Her Iroito blend is named for a champion bull her father, Oren Pollard, owned, and she also grows wine grapes in the Upper Yakima Valley.

How we chose these roasters

Every roaster here roasts in Washington and was operating when we read its own site, on the date its card shows (the list itself was last checked 2026-09-27). Facts come from each roaster's own pages, written in our words; we take nothing from reviews and show no ratings. No roaster pays to be listed, and a listing does not mean the roaster is part of the club. Run a roaster here and something is off? Email coffee@palousecoffeeclub.com and we correct or remove the page.
