Pollard Coffee is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Washington: an independent roaster based in Vashon, founded in 2012. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Robin Pollard, raised on an Iowa farm, left a career in tourism, wine and economic development and launched the roasting business in 2012. She taught herself to roast; Daniel Swenson now leads the roasting. Pollard holds a master's degree in agriculture and held an early job with Missouri's state agriculture department. She set up Pollard Per Se in 2012 as the company behind the coffee brand.
Her interest in beans took off in Washington, DC, where a Yemeni roaster in her neighborhood taught her about origins and roasting, and later trips took her to Central America, Europe and Asia. The Iroito blend is named for a champion bull owned by her father, Oren Pollard, and pairs South American and Indonesian coffees at a medium-dark roast. Grocers, shops, cafes and restaurants carry the coffee wholesale, and the company also roasts under contract for other brands.

House blends include Farm Back Forty Espresso Blend, Cultivator French Roast, Pollard's Black Sheep and Custom Blend. Single origins on the list when we checked: Kenya Central Highlands, Ethiopia Guji Natural, Uganda Rwenzori, Mexico La Yerba, Guatemala Ave Del Paraiso, Nicaragua La Virgen Estate, Costa Rica Santa Elena and Sumatra Gayo Highland. Robin Pollard also grows wine grapes in the Upper Yakima Valley, and the shop sells wine next to the coffee. A half gallon of ready-to-drink cold brew concentrate is sold for pickup or Vashon Island delivery only.
