Vista Clara Coffee is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Washington: an independent roaster based in Snohomish, founded in 1997. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Master roaster Dave Stewart and Joan Stewart built the roastery. Russ and Ann Tarleton, who ran their own coffee stand and shops, now own it. The new owners kept the brand as a trade name of their company, AmarKoS, named after their three golden retrievers. Coffee is roasted to order and shipped the next day, including six espresso options.
Dave Stewart's coffee career began in 1970, when he and his brother Jim opened the Wet Whisker, a Coupeville shop on Whidbey Island selling ice cream and coffee. That business grew into Stewart Brothers Coffee, later renamed Seattle's Best Coffee, and he went on to start Vista Clara as a wholesale and retail roastery in 1997. Russ Tarleton retired after 37 years as an intellectual property attorney, Ann Tarleton is an accountant, and Stewart stays on as a consultant on blends and roasting.
In January 2026 the roastery was certified as a USDA organic handler through California Certified Organic Farmers.
What they roast
Roast levels run medium, medium dark, dark and very dark. House blends include Harvest Blend, Lake House, Vista White, Early Bird, Moonrise, Suncoast, Boulder, Avanti, Pallino, Milano and Signature. Single origins on the list when we checked: Kenyan, Ethiopian Guji, Costa Rican Honey, Colombian, Sumatra and Guatemalan French. Decaf: Swiss Water Process Decaf.
