Umbrella Roasters is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Washington: an independent roaster based in Mount Vernon. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
The business continues a roasting dream of Thafer "Joe" Fahoum, who emigrated from the Middle East; his daughter and son-in-law run it. Before emigrating more than fifty years ago, Joe helped start a family coffee roasting tradition in his homeland. In the United States he married Catherine and raised four children, but never roasted here himself. Part of every bag sold goes to the Joe Fahoum Scholarship Fund for students.
The house blend comes in light, medium and dark roasts, and the medium and dark versions are also sold with cardamom, a nod to Arab coffee habits. Its Turkish coffee is sold in regular and decaf, along with copper or stainless gift sets and cezve pots for two or four people.

Why buying from Umbrella Roasters matters here
The name pokes fun at Northwest locals, who seldom carry umbrellas in the rain. The owners also read the umbrella as a canopy over several coffee cultures, from Turkish and Arabic styles to plain American drip. Joe and Catherine gave much of their time to local schools, sports, music and youth programs, which the scholarship fund carries on.
Every bag bought from a Mount Vernon roaster pays roasting and cafe wages in Washington, and the coffee reaches you days after roasting instead of months. That is the reason the club exists. Why local roasters matter.
