This Coffee Life is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Washington: an independent roaster based in Everett. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Dismas Smith began working in coffee in 1999 at a Microsoft cafeteria espresso stand, later managing a Zoka cafe in Seattle's Green Lake neighborhood. He entered his first barista competition at the 2001 Specialty Coffee Association show and went on to compete many more times. The roaster runs small batches with each customer in mind and has more than 20 years of coffee work behind him.
His story page says he was crowned North American Barista Champion in 2002 in Long Beach with a drink called Latin Love, then placed sixth at that year's World Barista Competition in Oslo. He learned to roast under Tim McCormack, then Zoka's head roaster, and later took over that job himself. Trips to origin have taken him to farms in Brazil and most Central American countries, and many of his coffees come from very small farms.
Customers can ask him to roast something special to their taste, and he hosts tasting events that pull in friends and neighbors.

Roast levels run No Remorse Dark Roast, Gael Force Dark Roast, The Dark Knight and Mexico Dark Roast. House blends include Dawn Defender, Twilight Sentinel, Crazy Train Life Blend and Blame It on the COVID-19 Life Blend. Single origins on the list when we checked: Nicaragua La Bastilla Natural, Costa Rica San Diego Tarrazu Natural Anaerobic, Guatemala Organic Joyabaj Natural, Colombia Finca Monteblanco Natural Anaerobic, Bali Kintamani Natural, Panama Finca Los Cantares Washed and El Salvador Puerto Arturo Natural Pacamara. Espresso: Twilight Espresso or Drip Blend. Decaf: Decaf Espresso Blend. Offerings change with the seasons, so this is what their own pages listed on 2026-09-28.
