San Juan Island Roasters is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Washington: an independent roaster based in Friday Harbor, founded in 1990. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
The business opened in 1990 as San Juan Coffee Roasting Company and calls itself Friday Harbor's longest-running coffee shop. Founders Steve and Irene Herring retired in 2022 and handed the business to the Perrollaz family. Evan Perrollaz was elected mayor of Friday Harbor in 2025 and still roasts every batch himself, the story page says.
The Perrollaz Brothers company includes Evan and Mary and Darin and Anna Perrollaz; one daughter works summers as a barista and others helped design the logos. Online orders are roasted to order and shipped twice a week, mostly by UPS, with USPS used for remote spots such as Alaska. Its Sumatra coffees were paused after severe weather washed out roads in Sumatra, and the shop pointed buyers to its Salish Medium and Salish Dark roasts.
