Pegasus Coffee is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Washington: an independent roaster based in Bainbridge Island, founded in 1979. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
David Dessinger began roasting commercially in December 1979 in a rented waterfront garage at Winslow Wharf, using a pre-war Danish roaster he imported. As a 1960s regular at Peet's in Berkeley, Dessinger learned what coffee could taste like, and Alfred Peet later mentored him as he started roasting. Late in 1983 the company opened a coffee bar in Seattle's Dexter Horton Building, which it calls the first specialty coffee bar downtown.
What they roast
Roast levels run Medium & Light, Dark, Italian Roast and French Roast. House blends include Pickleball Blend, House Blend, Espresso Blend, First Crossing Blend, Winslow's Revenge, Autumn Harvest Blend, Mocha Java and BIMA x Pegasus Blend. Single origins on the list when we checked: Tanzania Peaberry, Brazil Samambaia, Colombia El Corazon, Ethiopia Guji and Peru Cajamarca. Espresso: Espresso Blend.
