Olympia Coffee Roasting is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Washington: an independent roaster based in Olympia, founded in 2005. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Olympia Coffee began in 2005 as a wholesale roaster working out of an unmarked warehouse in downtown Olympia, roasting on a 12 kilo Diedrich. In 2007 it moved to Cherry Street in downtown Olympia and opened its first coffee bar, adding a Westside cafe in 2010 and a third Olympia cafe in the historic Wildwood building of the South Capitol neighborhood in 2013. Its first direct trade projects started in 2009 in Central and South America, and in 2013 it began direct trade work in Burundi and Kenya. Today it says it buys directly from farmers in nine countries across East Africa, Central America and South America.
Roast Magazine named it Micro Roaster of the Year in 2013, and the company won Good Food Awards for organic Ethiopian coffees in 2014 and 2016. In 2015 the roastery moved to 4th Avenue, tripling its space and adding a 23 kilo Gothot roaster, and the downtown coffee bar moved in alongside it. In 2018 it launched its Fair for All program, published its first transparency report and became a Certified B Corporation. It also opened cafes in West Seattle and Tacoma that year, then Columbia City in 2019.
Moonrise Bakery and pastry production were added in 2020, and the company became Living Wage Certified in 2022. Its stated mission is to improve quality of life for its farmers, its staff and its community. Every coffee is roasted to order each day at the downtown Olympia roastery.
What they roast
House blends include Big Truck, Little Buddy, Northwesterly, Morning Sun and Decaf Asterisk. Single origins on the list when we checked: Ethiopia Banko Gotiti, Ethiopia Benti Nenka Natural, Kenya Kagumoini AA, Burundi Gitwe Micro Lot 3, Colombia San Sebastian Reserva, Colombia Alexander Vargas Pink Bourbon, Ecuador Hacienda La Papaya Typica Mejorado and Panama Bambito Gesha. Big Truck is sold as an espresso blend, and a Signature Espresso Bundle is offered. Decaf Asterisk, a decaf blend. Where to drink it
The downtown Olympia cafe shares the building with the roastery and is open daily. Public cuppings are held on the first Friday of the month.
