Gloom Coffee is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Washington: an independent roaster based in Seattle, founded in 2023. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.

Their story

Alex Sciarrotta began planning the roastery early in 2023, after getting the chance to take over Narrative Coffee in Everett, a cafe he had worked at for years. Nate Reppert, a longtime co-worker, had been roasting for Velton Ross before the two launched the company. Two more former co-workers later joined, making a team of four. Nate Reppert got into coffee in 2016, pulling shots at Silvercup and Narrative Coffee before taking a production roaster job at Velton's.

The four owners, including Josh Modisette and Brandon Paul Weaver, have worked as baristas, sales reps, competitors, coaches, roasters and cafe owners. The founders say they want the company to be generous with pay and benefits for its staff.

Single origins on the list when we checked: Sujeily Vasquez, Peru (Geisha Washed), Mr. Mengeche Derso, Halo Beriti, Ethiopia (Natural), La Argentina, Colombia, Las Lajas, Costa Rica (Red Honey, SL-28), Gichathaini AA, Kenya and Mr. Mekele Gemeda, Halo Beriti, Ethiopia. Why buying from Gloom Coffee matters here

The shop takes its name from the gray Pacific Northwest weather, pitching its coffee as a small bright spot on overcast days. It buys through a handful of importers it has known for years, choosing lots for flavor while relying on those importers for fair pay to growers. Roasts lean light, and the menu holds one decaf, a darker blend called Doom, a brighter one called Partly Sunny and rotating single origins rated on a fun, funner, funnest scale. For each coffee it posts an Our Cost figure that breaks a pound into green price, roast loss, freight, packaging and labor; its sample totals $14.73 a pound.

Every order is roasted and mailed on Wednesday.

Every bag bought from a Seattle roaster pays roasting and cafe wages in Washington, and the coffee reaches you days after roasting instead of months. That is the reason the club exists. Why local roasters matter.
