Caffè Lusso is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Washington: an independent roaster based in Redmond, founded in 2000. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Philip Meech, then 23, started the roastery in the summer of 2000 in a built-out section of his parents' garage. Within two years it moved to a larger space, and in late 2017 it expanded into the current roastery, home to the Macchinista School for coffee professionals. The company says it has known most of its farmers for more than 15 years through direct trade.
Sumatra is the only coffee it takes to a dark roast, a choice Meech explains in a note on the company blog. Wholesale accounts get help with bar layout, business planning and equipment, plus barista training to keep staff calibrated on flavor. It also brews single origin cold brew in house and delivers it weekly in 5 gallon kegs, nitro or still, and for about ten years it has also supplied Black Scottie Chai and teas from Smith Tea.
What they roast
Roast levels run Medium/Dark (Guatemala Finca Florencia) and Dark (Sumatra only). House blends include Gran Miscela Carmo Espresso Blend, Lionshare Espresso Blend, Atlas Free Blend, Classic Drip and Cold Brew Blend. Single origins on the list when we checked: Guatemala Finca Florencia, Dark Sumatra, Ethiopia Zema and Costa Rica La Minita. Espresso: Gran Miscela Carmo and Lionshare. Decaf: Decaf Blend. Where to drink it
Beans can be bought at the roastery; staff ask visitors to knock if the door is locked during roasting. Online pickup orders placed before 11am on weekdays are ready at 2pm.
