Angler's Coffee is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Washington: an independent roaster based in Langley. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
As a teenager, Joe Monaghan helped at the Wet Whisker on Whidbey Island, the shop that later became Seattle's Best Coffee, where he was head roaster. He went on to lead La Marzocco in the United States before moving back to Whidbey in 2018 and installing a commercial roaster. Monaghan's fishing started in Montana, where his father took him to the Bitterroot Valley each summer, and he later fished around the world while working in coffee.
The company says its team brings more than 40 years of coffee work, from green buying and roasting to designing espresso equipment. Nearly every coffee is named for fly fishing, from flies such as the Caddis, Stimulator and Woolly Bugger to trout blends and a Bassheads line aimed at bass anglers. On its blog the company has pH tested four of its darker coffees, among them the Green Drake Decaf, to compare their acidity.

Roast levels run Medium, Medium Dark and Dark. House blends include Caddis Blend, Rainbow Trout Blend, Brown Trout Blend, Stimulator Blend, Woolly's Blend, Sherbrook's Blend, Bassheads Largemouth Blend and Bassheads Smallmouth Blend. A share of each sale goes to fly fishing conservation partners, and it sells a coffee made with Casting for Recovery. Past conservation partners include the Wild Steelhead Coalition, Warriors on the Fly and the Bonefish and Tarpon Trust, and an artist series bag sent $1 per sale to the Upper Skagit Tribe. On Whidbey, Monaghan fishes a small trout lake near home and the salt water of the Salish Sea, and the old Wet Whisker site later became the home of the company.
