Their story
Owner Justin Inahara worked production at Broadcast Coffee Roasters in Seattle and bought his first bag of green coffee in fall 2021. He began as a barista in Oregon in 2012 before moving to Seattle. Inahara says both sets of his grandparents ran their own businesses, and he sees the roastery as a way to support his family.
The company aims to pay farmers properly and says it roasts each coffee to its tastiest point.
What they roast
House blends include Saisho Blend. Single origins on the list when we checked: Nicaragua Lo Prometido, Vietnam Son La White Honey, Vietnam Mang Den Arabica, Ethiopia Limu Grade 3 and Peru Finca Churupampa Organic. Why buying from Tanuki Coffee Roasters matters here
The name is the Japanese raccoon dog, a nod to the owner's family roots in Japan. His wife Miko draws the seasonal tanuki artwork on the bags. Retail stockists include Koto on Broadway, which makes its coffee jelly with a Tanuki blend made for the shop, plus Central Co-op, Hood Famous Bakeshop, Sairen and Tomi Mart in Bend, Oregon. In Japanese folklore the tanuki is a trickster that also brings luck, and Inahara says he likes backing other Asian American businesses.
Every bag bought from a Seattle roaster pays roasting and cafe wages in Washington, and the coffee reaches you days after roasting instead of months. That is the reason the club exists. Why local roasters matter.
