Onda Origins is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Washington: an independent roaster based in Seattle, founded in 2016. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
The family-owned roastery buys coffee straight from growers and pays them an extra $1 per pound once that coffee is roasted and on the shelf. Each coffee is sold under the grower's name, such as Rudy Pascual Perez in Guatemala or Kiko Ribeiro in Brazil. Brothers Paul and Scott Tupper launched Onda in 2016 to roast and sell wholesale, then opened the Hillman City cafe and roastery in 2019.
The idea took shape after Scott worked in development in Samoa and Paul led eco-tours near Costa Rica's Monteverde Cloud Forest, where he met coffee growers. Their first farm partner, Costa Rican grower Enrique Navarro Jr., once spent a summer on their Seattle couch while taking English classes. According to the company, the revenue share can double what partner farms earn and spreads payments across the year as bags sell.

House blends include Fresh Flours, Neo Noir and Tusitala. Production is a two-person team roasting 10 pound batches on one machine, supplying the Hillman City cafe and every Fresh Flours bakery location. Fresh Flours Bakery, a sister business, bakes the pastries sold in the cafe.
