Moka Joe Coffee is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Washington: an independent roaster based in Anacortes, founded in 2000. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
Dan and Kirsti Mendum, both 1986 graduates of Anacortes High School, opened Coyote Coffee Roasters at the current Anacortes site in 2007. In 2011 the couple bought Moka Joe, a Bellingham roasting brand dating to 2000, and they still roast private label coffee under the Coyote name. Wholesale accounts include more than 100 small independent cafes and local grocers, among them some Food Pavilion and Market stores.
Alongside its own label, the company does private label roasting for Cafe Femenino, a coffee line linked to a foundation that funds programs for women in coffee-growing regions. Dan Mendum is listed as CEO and master roaster and Kirsti Mendum as owner, with a general manager, a coffeehouse manager and a lead barista making up the rest of the small team. The owners say they aim to pay staff a living wage and use management training and team building to help young employees grow.
Wholesale customers such as cafes, drive-thru stands, cafeterias and kitchens can also order Monin syrups, Numi teas, MJ-Pods and organic cold brew through the roaster.
What they roast
Roast levels run Light, Medium, Dark and Espresso. House blends include Moka Joe Blend and New Morning Blend. Si Se Espresso (medium roast blend of Ethiopia, Mexico, Papua New Guinea and Nicaragua).
