Grounds for Change is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Washington: an independent roaster based in Poulsbo, founded in 2003. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.

Their story

This family-owned roaster has worked on the Kitsap Peninsula since 2003 and roasts only certified fair trade, organic coffee. It offsets carbon emissions from farm to cup, holds B Corporation certification and gives over 1% of sales through 1% For The Planet. Working with ClimeCo, it says it became the first US roaster to earn the Carbon-Free Certified product label, which it has kept since 2008, and it buys all its electricity from renewable sources.

Its organic certification comes from the Washington State Department of Agriculture, and the fair trade label it uses, Fair for Life, is audited by Ecocert. For every pound of its Peru Cafe Femenino sold, it adds 25 cents to a grant fund for the women growers; the 2026 grant paid for irrigation work in Santa Rosa de Minas. Beyond retail bags it runs a Coffee of the Month Club, an annual membership that takes 10 percent off purchases, and a wholesale program for independent cafes.

House blends include Autumn Seasonal, Solstice Blend, Nordic Blend, Agate Pass Blend, Equinox Blend, French Roast and Vienna Roast. Single origins on the list when we checked: Rwanda Sholi, Ethiopia Yirgacheffe, Guatemala Forestal, Peru Cafe Femenino, Sumatra Telong, Nicaragua Miraflor, Honduras Congolon and Guatemala Quetzal. Espresso: Obsidian Espresso, Dolce Espresso and Classic Espresso. Decaf: Decaf Sumatra Telong, Decaf Peru Cajamarca, Decaf Midnight, Decaf First Light, Decaf Espresso and a Half-Caff Blend.
