Cloud City Coffee is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Washington: an independent roaster based in Seattle, founded in 2002. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.
Their story
The queer and woman owned roaster runs a cafe in Maple Leaf that bakes pastries and makes breakfast and lunch in house. Roasting happens on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and online orders ship the same day. Owner Jill Killen opened the Maple Leaf cafe in 2002 and started roasting in 2019, with the roastery based in Georgetown.
In a post on the site, Killen writes that she had tinkered with roasting since 2012 but held off for years, partly from self-doubt in a field dominated by men. Killen is a certified Q Grader and picks every coffee the company roasts. The company says it was named among the 2022 Good Food Award winners.
What they roast
House blends include Cloud City Blend, Wild Leaves Fall Blend, Birds Connect Seattle Blend and El Diablo Blend. Single origins on the list when we checked: Burundi Turihamwe, Guatemala La Bolsa, Ethiopia Anasora, Colombia La Pradera, Ethiopia Habtamu Fekadu, Burundi Hafi and Honduras Finca La Unica.
