Campfire Coffee is one of the beloved local roasters we follow in Washington: an independent roaster based in Tacoma. Here is what their own pages and public sources say about them, in our words.

Their story

The owners decided to roast over actual campfire heat and paired the shop with a goal of getting more diverse groups outdoors. A crowdfunding drive in May 2019 raised about $10,000, and the first shop opened in Tacoma on August 17, 2020, after a long buildout and the start of COVID-19. Campfire is owned by Quincy and Whitni Henry, a Black family of avid campers who want both specialty coffee and the outdoors to draw a more diverse crowd, Daily Coffee News reported in 2020.

Quincy Henry spent nearly ten years at a barbecue restaurant learning to cook over wood, then shadowed a roaster at Dillanos before roasting 5 pound batches in a drum over open flame. The first shop covers about 1,400 square feet and is set up like a campsite, with forest wallpaper, camping chairs and an electric fire pit. In 2022 the couple announced a downtown shop with a lending library of camping gear and outdoor classes, along with a separate roastery in the Rhodes Center.
