What is single origin coffee?
Single origin coffee is coffee that comes from one source rather than a mix of several. The source ranges from one country down to one farm, or even one field harvested on one day. Roasters sell it so you can taste what makes that place and that lot different.
How wide is "one origin"?
Wider than the name suggests. Wikipedia's single-origin article describes three scales:
- A country, such as Brazil, Colombia or Vietnam, each of which grows a wide range of beans.
- A farm or estate, anywhere from a few acres to a plantation covering many square miles.
- A micro-lot: a single field on a farm, a small range of altitude and one particular harvest day.
No universal rule or governing body enforces the label, the article notes, though some countries regulate their own markets. So read the bag. A label that names the farm, the producer, the region and the process tells you far more than one that names only the country. That detail is also why buyers value single origins: the article ties their appeal to the transparency they try to offer about where the coffee came from.
What single origin coffee tastes like
There is no one taste, which is the point. Wikipedia describes single origins as offering distinct characteristics and specific tastes compared with coffees blended from many origins. The place, the variety and the processing show up in the cup, and a lighter roast lets more of that through; see light roast.
Roasters' single origin lists change as lots run out, so the coffee you liked may be gone by your next order. That is why the lists below carry the date we checked them.

Washington State roasters that sell single origins
Every Washington roaster we list sells at least one single origin. A few that show how different the approaches are, from their own shops, checked September 27, 2026:
- Boon Boona Coffee, Renton, buys only African coffee. Its single origins include Mahiber from Ethiopia, Nova from Rwanda, Kajere from Uganda and Tumaini from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
- Olympia Coffee Roasting says it buys directly from farmers in nine countries. Its list included a Panama Bambito Gesha and a Colombian Pink Bourbon from Alexander Vargas.
- Kuma Coffee, Seattle, buys direct in Colombia from Narino, Tolima, Huila and Antioquia. It does not buy Ethiopian coffee directly, because it says traceability there is hard to establish, which is the single origin promise in a sentence.
- Seven Coffee Roasters, Seattle, sells 100% Kona, a single origin grown in the United States.
- Fulcrum Coffee Roasters, Seattle, keeps its Fulcrum brand for traceable single origins and releases a Costa Rica Heritage Collection each year.
