Where Bean Box has the edge
Bean Box offers more choices on almost every dial. Its plans come in 12 oz, 2 lb and 5 lb bags, so a household that drinks a lot, or a small office, can buy in bulk. Deliveries can land every 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 weeks. There are eight taste profiles, from Light and Bright to Cold Brew.
It has a named curator. Bean Box says its coffees are chosen by Maryna Gray, an international Cup of Excellence judge, and it uses your ratings to steer later picks.
Its pool is national and large: 64 roasters and more than 600 coffees. It has been at this a long time, too. Its about page marks its first shipment in September 2014.
It also carries some Washington coffee. The roasters shown on its home page include Boon Boona and Camber, both roasters we list, along with several other Seattle names.
Where Palouse is different
Every bag is from Washington State. Bean Box mixes Washington roasters in with roasters from Arkansas, Georgia, South Carolina and elsewhere. We send only independent roasters that roast here, a different one each box, so a year of boxes becomes a tour of the state's roasters rather than the country's.
The price per 12 oz bag is lower. Ours is $16.99 for any roast. Bean Box's plan page lists $18 to $21.50 for a 12 oz bag, depending on the plan.
Bean Box's sign-up offer is a free coffee for joining its email and text list. Ours is built into the plan: first bag free, you pay $7.99 shipping.
Two roasters can share a box. Order two bags and give the second its own roast and style, such as a light single origin and a dark decaf, and they can come from two different Washington roasters.
Gift prices are set and include shipping: $66.99, $134.99 or $269.99 for 3, 6 or 12 boxes, and they do not renew.
The promises are the same for every box: "Roasted and shipped within 3 days." "Free replacement if a bag disappoints." "A reminder email 3 days before each box." "Your ratings steer the next bag."
If you are deciding between the two, three questions settle most of it. Do you need a 2 lb or 5 lb bag, or a delivery every 3, 5 or 6 weeks? Bean Box offers those and we do not. Do you want a curator choosing across the whole country? That is Bean Box's model. Do you want every bag to come from a roaster in Washington State, from Tacoma to Spokane, with a different one each box? That is ours.
