What Atlas does well
The world tour is the whole point, and Atlas builds the box around it. Each month's coffee comes with a postcard from that country, tasting notes and some coffee history. Past coffees on its site include a Yirgacheffe from Ethiopia, a Rio Negro from Costa Rica and a washed coffee from Tamil Nadu in India.
Its price per bag is lower than ours on the two-bag plan: $16 against our $16.99. Atlas then adds $4.95 shipping per shipment.
It is flexible in ways that matter. Atlas lets you brew for a drip machine, a French press, espresso or decaf, and it also sells pods. It ships to Canada as well as the US, which we do not. Its money back guarantee runs 30 days.
And it tells you how the trial ends. Its first-bag-free page says you get 28 days, then an email reminder 4 days before the plan turns paid.
How Palouse is different
Our club is a tour of roasters. Each box comes from a different independent roaster in Washington State, from Herkimer on Phinney Ridge to Camber in Bellingham to Indaba in Spokane.
If the world tour is what draws you to Atlas, Washington roasters cover a lot of ground themselves. Boon Boona Coffee in Renton buys only African coffees, from Ethiopia, Rwanda, Kenya, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Olympia Coffee Roasting says it buys directly from farmers in nine countries across East Africa, Central America and South America. Kuma Coffee sources directly in Colombia, and Victrola has bought the entire harvest of one Honduran farm since 2014. At Atlas the country sets the coffee. With us you set light, medium, dark or mix it up, and a style: single origin, blend, espresso-friendly or decaf. A two-bag box can carry a second roast and style, and the two bags can come from two different roasters.
Our gifts include shipping and end on their own after 3, 6 or 12 boxes. The buyer picks the roast, the grind and a start date, and can add a gift note.
